A Telegram account is tied to a phone number, and that number is usually the weak spot: SIM cards get lost, numbers change, and a temporary number used for sign-up goes back to the pool. This guide covers how to secure your Telegram account and recover access if you lose the number: which settings to turn on in advance, what to do in common situations, and when recovery is no longer possible.
Why the phone number is the main risk
When you log in on a new device, Telegram verifies your phone number. The code goes to an app session you already have first; if there are no active sessions, it is sent by SMS or a call. That creates two ways to lose access:
- you lose the number and are logged out of every device at the same time — there is nothing to confirm the login with;
- someone else gets the number — for example, a carrier reassigns an old SIM or a temporary number expires. In theory, the new owner can request a code for it.
Both cases are covered by protection you set up in advance. Once access is lost, your options shrink a lot.
Five settings to turn on today
Two-Step Verification (cloud password)
This is a second factor: after the code, Telegram asks for a password only you know. Even if an SMS lands in the wrong hands, nobody can log in without the password. Go to Settings → Privacy and Security → Two-Step Verification. Use a password you don't use anywhere else, and skip hints that make it easy to guess.
Recovery email
While setting the password, Telegram offers to add an email address. Add it and confirm it: if you forget the password, a reset code goes to that email. Without a recovery email, a forgotten password can only be reset together with the account.
Keep an eye on active sessions
Settings → Devices shows where you are logged in. Keep at least one session on a device you actually use — then login codes for new devices arrive in the app instead of by SMS. End unknown sessions immediately. You can also set inactive sessions to end automatically there.
Account self-destruct period
Telegram deletes an account if you don't log in for longer than the chosen period. For an account you rarely use, set the maximum period in Privacy and Security, otherwise it can disappear together with your chats while you're not looking.
Hide your number
In Privacy and Security → Phone Number, choose who can see your number and limit who can find you by it. It doesn't stop hacking, but fewer people know your account's login.
Don't hand over the code yourself
Most account takeovers don't exploit bugs — people simply share their code. Keep a few rules in mind:
- login codes come only from the official Telegram account with a verification badge — never forward them to anyone, including "support";
- Telegram staff never ask for your code or cloud password in a chat;
- don't enter your number and code on third-party websites — "votes", "Premium giveaways", "account checks";
- if you get a code you didn't request, someone is trying to log in: check Devices and make sure Two-Step Verification is on.
What to do if you've lost access
The steps depend on what you still have.
| Situation | What to do |
|---|---|
| Number lost, but a session is still active | Open Settings, tap your number and choose Change Number — confirm the new number and your chats stay |
| Forgot the cloud password, recovery email set | On the password screen tap "Forgot password?" — the code goes to your email |
| Forgot the password, no recovery email | The only option is resetting the account: after a waiting period it is deleted and chats are lost |
| No session and no access to the number | Logging in without the number is generally impossible. If the number was yours, ask your carrier to restore the SIM |
| Someone else requested a code | Don't enter anything, end unknown sessions and change the cloud password |
If the number belonged to you, start with your carrier: restoring the SIM with your documents brings back SMS access — and with it, your account.
Accounts on a temporary or rented number
Registering Telegram on a virtual number is common for work and test accounts. To keep such an account yours, plan around how long the number lasts.
- An activation number is reserved for you for 20 minutes and then returns to the pool. Right after sign-up, set a cloud password with a recovery email and don't end your only session.
- A rented number stays yours for the whole rental period and can be extended. While the rental is active, the SMS for logging in on a new device arrives in the My numbers section. That's more convenient for a work account used on several devices.
- Before the rental ends, decide what to do with the account: extend the rental or change the number in settings to a permanent one.
The difference between an activation and a rental is covered in how long a temporary phone number lasts.
FAQ
Can the new owner of my old number log into my account?
They can request a code, but with Two-Step Verification on they can't get in without your password. That's why a password with a recovery email is a must for every account.
Can I recover Telegram without my phone number?
If you still have an active session on another device — yes, by changing the number. With no sessions and no access to the number, logging in is generally not possible.
Will my chats survive a number change?
Yes. Changing the number in settings keeps your chats, channels and contacts — only the number linked to the account changes.
How can I tell someone is trying to hack my account?
Watch for login codes you didn't request and unknown devices in your session list. End those sessions and change your cloud password.
