SMS Verification Code Not Received? Causes and Fixes

Aug 28, 2026•simdrop•

You tapped "Send code" and nothing arrived. It happens to everyone, and there is almost always a concrete reason: the service picked a different delivery channel, a fraud filter quietly stopped the message, or the SMS was sent but filtered on the way. This guide explains why an SMS verification code is not received and how to fix it, starting with quick checks, then causes on the service and carrier side, and finally a separate plan for people receiving codes on a virtual number.

Start with five quick checks

Rule out the simple things first — they explain most cases.

  • Number and country. Check the country code and the digit count. A classic mistake is entering the country code twice: picking "+44" from the list and then typing 44 again at the start of the number.
  • Wait two or three minutes. Services and carriers sometimes queue messages. Requesting a new code too early does not speed anything up and can trigger an attempt limit.
  • Delivery channel. Read the confirmation screen carefully. The code may go to an app, to your email, to WhatsApp, or arrive as a phone call. There is usually a "Send SMS" or "Try another way" link nearby.
  • Code lifetime. Many codes expire after 5–10 minutes. Entering an old one returns "invalid code" — request a new one and use it right away.
  • Network and VPN. When your IP address and the number's country clearly don't match, the service's fraud system may silently skip the SMS. Try without a VPN or with a server in the number's country.

Causes on the service side

The service sending the code is the main gatekeeper. It decides whether to send an SMS at all and through which channel.

The service prefers another channel

Messengers and large platforms save money on SMS. Telegram first sends the code to an app session you already have, OpenAI uses WhatsApp for some countries, and Google or Apple may ask you to confirm on another device. If you are expecting an SMS, look for a switch to change the delivery method — it often appears only after the first failed attempt.

Fraud protection kicked in

Protection systems weigh several signals at once: number type, country, IP address, device and how often codes are requested. When something looks off, a service may:

  • pretend the code was sent while not sending it;
  • offer a phone call only;
  • show errors such as "phone number not supported" or "try again later".

Requesting the code again rarely helps here. Changing the conditions does: a number from another country, the mobile app instead of a browser, VPN switched off.

Too many attempts

After three to five requests in a row, almost every service adds a cooldown — from a few minutes to a full day. Typical signs are "too many attempts" messages or a resend button that stops responding. The only fix is to wait out the stated time.

The number is already linked to an account

If an account already exists for the number, the service may send a recovery code instead of a sign-up code, or refuse registration altogether. Make sure the number has not been used with this service before.

Causes on the phone and carrier side

If you are waiting for the code on your own SIM card, check the device too.

Where to lookWhat to check
Messages spam filterAndroid and iPhone move texts from unknown senders into separate folders such as "Spam" or "Unknown senders"
Blocked numbersA sender with a text name may have ended up on your block list
StorageWhen storage is full, some SMS are not saved
Dual SIM or eSIMThe message went to the other line — check which number you entered
RoamingAbroad, texts from some senders are delayed or not delivered
Carrier settingsBans on service or premium messages, blocked short codes

If nothing helps, call your carrier and ask whether messages from a specific sender are blocked. That is faster than repeating requests.

If you receive the code on a virtual number

Virtual numbers come with their own rules. A service sees not only the country but also the number type, and it trusts some ranges more than others.

  • Choose mobile numbers, not VoIP. Many services reject internet-only numbers that have no mobile carrier behind them.
  • Check deliverability. The country statistics page shows which destinations currently receive codes from specific services best.
  • Use the mobile app first. For messengers this raises the chance of getting an SMS rather than a call.
  • Don't wait the full 20 minutes. If the code hasn't arrived in 2–3 minutes, a second request is unlikely to change that. Switching the country works better.

How it works at simdrop:

  • after purchase the number is reserved for you for 20 minutes, and the code appears in the My numbers section as soon as it is delivered;
  • 2 minutes after purchase you can cancel the activation — the money returns to your balance — or replace the number;
  • if no SMS arrives within 20 minutes, the purchase closes automatically, also with a refund;
  • if the first code has arrived and the service needs another one, the "More SMS" button requests a repeat message on the same number while the activation is open.

If you need codes more than once — for example to sign in on new devices — rent a number for the period you need. The difference is explained in how long a temporary phone number lasts.

Step-by-step plan when the code never arrives

  • Check the number, the country code and the selected delivery channel.
  • Wait 2–3 minutes and request the code once more.
  • Turn off the VPN or choose a server in the number's country.
  • Try the mobile app instead of the website — or the other way round if the service insists on confirming in the app.
  • On a virtual number, cancel the activation for a refund and take a number from another country.
  • On your own number, check spam filters and ask your carrier whether service messages are blocked.

FAQ

How long does a verification SMS usually take?

Usually from a few seconds to a couple of minutes. A delay longer than five minutes almost always means the message will not be delivered, so change the conditions instead of waiting.

Why does the service say "code sent" when nothing arrives?

Often this is the fraud filter at work: the request was accepted but no SMS was sent, and services don't always say so. Change the number's country, your network or the sign-in method.

Can I get a verification code without a SIM card?

Yes, if the service accepts SMS to virtual numbers. Many popular platforms do, but the rules depend on the service and the country.

Is it safe to register an important account on a temporary number?

For accounts you will come back to for years, use your own number or a rental, and always turn on two-factor authentication. A temporary number goes back to the pool after 20 minutes, so you won't be able to recover access by SMS later.

Need a code right now? Pick a service and country in the simdrop catalog: the price is shown before you buy, and if the SMS doesn't arrive, the money goes back to your balance.
