A new YouTube channel can upload videos right away, but some features stay locked until you verify a phone number: long videos, custom thumbnails and live streams. YouTube phone verification takes a couple of minutes once you know where to find it and why the code sometimes doesn't arrive. Here's what verification unlocks, how to complete it and how to keep access to your channel afterwards.
What phone verification unlocks
YouTube splits features into three levels. Verifying a phone number unlocks the middle one.

For most creators the intermediate level is enough: without custom thumbnails, videos get noticeably fewer clicks in search and recommendations, and the 15-minute cap gets in the way of tutorials, podcasts and stream recordings.
How to verify: step by step
- Open YouTube Studio and go to Settings → Channel → Feature eligibility.
- Under intermediate features, click "Verify phone number". The same screen opens at youtube.com/verify.
- Choose your country, enter the number and pick how to get the code — text message (SMS) or a voice call.
- Enter the six-digit code and click Submit.
- Check Feature eligibility again: intermediate features should now show as enabled.
Live streaming isn't instant after you enable it for the first time — YouTube may take up to 24 hours to prepare it. That's normal and has nothing to do with the number.
If the code doesn't arrive
YouTube verification uses the same mechanism as Google account verification, so the problems are similar.
- "This phone number cannot be used for verification." The number has verified too many accounts or belongs to a VoIP range. You need a different mobile number.
- No code after 2–3 minutes. Request it once more, check the country code and make sure you didn't type it twice at the start of the number.
- Too many attempts. After several requests in a row Google adds a cooldown. Wait and try again later, ideally with another number.
- VPN. If your IP address is in one country and the number is from another, rejection is more likely. Turn off the VPN during verification or choose a server in the number's country.

Can you use a virtual number?
Yes, if you'd rather not link your personal number to the channel — for example, when a team runs it or it's a separate project. How to keep access to your channel
The verified number unlocks features, but signing in to the channel means signing in to your Google account. If the number was temporary, protect the account in other ways right away:
- turn on 2-Step Verification with an authenticator app or a passkey;
- add a recovery email for account recovery;
- if several people manage the channel, give them access through channel permissions in YouTube Studio instead of sharing the password.
Then a number that changes or expires won't affect access to the channel.
What can switch features off again
Verification isn't permanent. Intermediate features can be restricted if the channel receives Community Guidelines or copyright strikes. A new number doesn't help in that case — restrictions are lifted only when the strikes expire or an appeal succeeds. Follow the platform's rules and your verification stays in effect.
